Winter is such a strange time for the photography business.
While i don't do it full time in the first place, it is always light on business. Not many people get married in the dead of winter (though if i get married, i t.o.t.a.l.l.y. would!) and it's not the most ideal time for family or senior portrait sessions. Not a lot of foliage & often quite frigid temperatures.
While all of those things are true, i LOVE winter & i love the winter light that is softer than a fresh coat of dry, power snow and illuminates everything & everyone with its tender light.
So, every winter season looks different for me & this season has been full of head shots! Here are a few favorites from a few of the sessions i've done in the past few months. I am honored to have had the privilege to provide a tangible "face" to the public for these talented individuals.
Corinn Keene is a model for The Clutts Agency and a student at the New York Film Academy in NYC. I did a shoot with her for her modeling portfolio back in the fall (which will show up on this blog soon!). Over her Christmas break, we took some basic head shots she needed for her classes & work in New York.
D.J. Flickinger is a senior at King George High School & an talented actor in the King George Theatre Department. He is auditioning for the theatre program at VCU, so i took some head shots for him to give when he goes to audition. It thrills me to see the talent from the that department, which was near & dear to my heart in high school, continue pursuing their passion for theatre outside of high school!
Linda White is a talented local writer & a public speaker. She is the assistant editorial page writer at the Free Lance-Star and a published novelist. She recently was signed for two more books & she needed portraits for the face-of-the-author on the back cover! This was super exciting for me to do, not only because her first book, Bloody Point, is such a terrific read, but because i always look at the author on the back of books i read with particular interest. Their portraits always fascinate me; to know that the entire world i am reading and being sucked into comes to life solely because of their mind & their life. Who the are and what their life has been so far defines the story! Anyway...*steps off my book nerd soapbox* you can check out Linda's book here and i'll keep the blogosphere informed as to when her next two books come out!
Last, but most certainly not least, is Devin Altizer. This is a classic example of why sometimes, winter is not a fun time to do portraits! It was quite possibly the coldest photo session i've ever done, but it was definitely one of the most fun as well! Devin is a musical theatre major at Emory & Henry in Emory, Virginia. He is also one of my best friend's boyfriend! Not only is he a talented actor & singer, he has a love & affinity for song writing & composing, which will take him big places. While he was in town visiting Tara, i took some head shots for him to use for the many upcoming auditions he has on his plate.
Remember how i said winter can be a hard time to shoot? It also has its beautiful perks. Like that nice, soft light. And the occasional down pouring of random snow :-)
